Interventions

Mindfulness interventions are offered to introduce mindfulness practices into a person or a group of people’s lives. Teaching mindful practices in group workshops, often combining modalities or in a clinical setting for a more integrative approach to psychotherapy. Tailor made to the group or persons requirements.

MBSR

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a blend of meditation, body awareness, and yoga: learning through practice and study how your body handles (and can resolve) stress neurologically.

The MBSR is an 8-week course during which you learn the skills and techniques needed to live mindfully for better mental, emotional and physical health, to cope with stress, pain, and the challenges of everyday life, deal with disturbing events with grace and composure, be fully present and alive in this moment, whatever the circumstances.

Being based in mindfulness meditation, MBSR is also a powerful tool for mental mastery and concentration training. The MBSR curriculum focuses on the experiential cultivation of both “formal” and “informal” mindfulness practice as a means of familiarizing oneself with awareness itself (mindfulness). The recognition of an innate, ever-present awareness is the foundation for the development of positive health behaviours, psychological and emotional resilience, and an overarching sense of wellbeing that can be effectively cultivated and relied upon across the adult life span. MBSR is therefore an effective clinical approach that can be utilized by participants far beyond completion of the program.

Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1979, making it one of the most researched and, therefore, evidence-based interventions for the long-term management of chronic pain, stress and emotional distress.

The 8-week program requires about 40 minutes of daily practice, weekly group sessions of up to 2 hours and a day long retreat. MBSR is open to beginners and no previous meditation or mindfulness experience is required. The course materials include a manual and audios (where applicable) as well as transcripts of the mindfulness exercises and meditations. Led by Iani De Kock, a certified MBSR facilitator and clinical psychologist, assisted by Suzi Seha, a mindfulness facilitator.

Retreats

Mindfulness Day and Weekend Retreats allow participants to immerse themselves in mindfulness and meditation in a supported environment over the course of a half day, full day or weekend. The retreats include group discussions, workshops, informal and formal meditation and mindful practices. The retreats will have a specific theme and focus, such as a silent retreat, building resilience, shadow work, compassion and such.

Schools

Taking mindfulness into schools happens on two levels:

Workshops and mindfulness sessions with groups of school children. Teaching them coping skills that they can take with them into their lives.

Workshops for teaching staff. The benefit of teachers understanding mindfulness and having their own mindful practice will bring an understanding of the importance of using mindfulness in the classroom. Workshops are offered to teachers to establish a personal practice and cultivate an understanding of mindfulness and the benefits of the practice. Teachers are taught effective mindful practices to use in the classroom. These exercises to be used in the classroom could start or end the day, calm the children when emotions are running high, focus the children before writing tests, and teach them the importance of pausing to see how they feel and learning to respond rather than react to situations.
Taking mindfulness into school is educating future generations, the future leaders of Namibia.

One-on-one Sessions

Working privately one-on-one with is not as cost effective an option in comparison to the options discussed above but are sometimes necessary and the best way to move forward with a patient. Individual sessions can precede group mindfulness sessions.
